My visual art glossary.

20 terms

My name is lilyane and I study to Lionel-Groulx College, in the program of visual Art since one year. In this program, we use many terms that it's important to know. I make this glossary to facilitate the comprehension of the language that I use in my program.This glossary can be useful for many people. Mostly for the person who wants to study in visual art but also for everybody who wants to know more about this field. In my glossary, I put 20 terms that I consider useful and necessary to know, than I often use. to find the good description, I use my knowledge and a website that contains much vocabulary of visual art. I which that my glossary going to help some of you.

abstract
It's an artwork where the subject have been modified or changed. It's no longer look realistic.
Example: This artwork is abstract, because I can't say what is representing.

art exhibition
it's when an artiste or many artists have the opportunity to shows their artwork to everybody who wants to see it.
Example: The other day, I was going to see an art exhibition of an artist than I like.

artist's studio
It's a local in which the artist works.
Example: Every time I want to make a sculpture, I am going in my artist's studio.

artwork
It's the finishing work of the artist.
Example: I like to see the different artwork, when I go to museum.

atmospheric perspective
It's the use of color and value changed to make a distance effect.
Example: I like to use the atmospheric perspective to create a distance.

brush
It's a tool to apply the paint.
Example: I use my favorite brush to paint on my canvas.

It's the sport on which we paint.
Example: I paint a flower on my canvas.

chromatic circle
It's a circle with the primary, secondary and tertiary color. There are many types so in some of it, it can have more color.
Example: I use the chromatic circle to create the good color than I need.

drawing
It's an illustration in tow dimension. It's achieved with a draw medium.
Example: This drawing is amazing.

easel
It's a frame in wood supporting or exposing the canvas or a drawing.
Example: I put my canvas on my easel to expose my artwork.

gradation
It's a gradual transition from a lighter color to a darker color.
Example: There is a lighting in my drawing, so I do a gradation to make the transition between the dark ant the light.

medium
It's the materials that the artist used to do his art.
Example: The medium that I used to do this painting, is acrylic pants.

negative space
It's the space around the subject and it definite the subject that we want to illustrate.
Example: I use the negative space around the model to make it easier to draw my model.

opacity
It's the quality of a materiel not to let the light go through.
Example: This materiel is perfect, because it's opaque.

paint
It's a pigment substance. It's used to cover a surface.
Example: I use paint to cover my canvas.

pastel
It's a stick of pigment. It has considers like a dry medium. There is a hard and soft type.
Example: I like to work with my pastels when i do art.

pencil
It's a medium to draw a two dimension artwork. It's stick and pigmented or not.
Example: I draw a sky with my blue pencil.

perspective
It's a method to create a depth in drawing or painting, with layering or colors, with the size of the element and with the conductive lines.
Example: I paint a basement in perspective in my landscape.

proportion
It's the relation with the size in the same subject or to one subject in the artwork and another.
Example: The proportion of my drawing respect the real proportion of my subject.

sculpture
The art process to modeling, carving or assemble material to create a three dimension form.
Example: I am modeling many hands to make a sculpture.
